Tree Board Meets
The Trenton Tree Board Committee met Tuesday at city hall, discussion a tree replacement program and making final plans for the Arbor Day celebration.
According to information provided by Tree Board Committee President Chuck Lankheit, the Tree Replacement Program for Trenton Municipal Utilities was approved by the board and must now be approved by the Board of Public Works before it can be implemented during the next fiscal year. It was agreed by the board that any enforcement of the tree ordinance should be done by city hall officials.
The Arbor Day celebration is scheduled in Trenton for April 25, although several activities will be held prior to that date. Three Prairie Fire Crabapple Trees will be planted along the walking/bike trail just east of the Trenton Middle School by Diana Klinginsmith’s eighth grade science class. Board members Gordon Joiner and Lankheit will assist in the planting, which will occur on April 17. An Arbor Day Trivia Contest will be held the week of April 20, with winners to receive tree seedlings as prizes. The Arbor Day Celebration will be held on April 25 at the location of the planted trees at the middle school. The program will include the signing of an Arbor Day proclamation, awarding of prizes to the winners in the fifth grade poster contest, a short program on Arbor Day by the eighth grade science class and the dedication of the newly-planted trees.
A discussion was held concerning an amendment of the city tree ordinance to include utility easements that are not currently covered in the ordinance. Lankheit will draft a proposed amendment and present it at the next board meeting.
