Trenton High School sophomore Jesse Meek took sixth place in the 152-pound class of the Class 1 MSHSAA Wrestling Champion-ships in Columbia over the weekend.

Meek was one of three THS wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament. Seniors Zach Plumb and Matthew Chambers also participated.

Jesse Meek

Meek went 2-3 in the tournament. He won his opening two matches before being sidetracked by the eventual state champion, Brandon Simpson of Richmond, in the semifinals.

?Jesse had a solid tournament,? Head Coach Bill Hill said. ?He wrestled pretty well all weekend but lost to a tough kid in the semifinals.?

Meek lost by technical fall to Simpson in the semifinals, 21-6.

In the consolation semifinals Meek lost by major decision to freshman Aaron Bridgeman of Maysville, 9-1. In the fifth place match Meek lost to senior Tyler Forsee of Centralia by major decision, 12-3.

?Jesse is just a sophomore and I look for him to make it back to state,? Hill said.

Meek had previously pinned Trae Vanderpool of Lawson and decisioned Cody Green of Monett to get to the semifinals. Meek finished the 2002-2003 season with a 26-16 record.

Matthew Chambers

Chambers won his opening match of the tournament in the 125-pound class, but that win would later to prove to be very costly for the THS senior. Chambers cracked a pair ribs in his opening win against Ryan Simms of Pleasant Hill, but continued, losing in the quarterfinals to Ryan Farewell of Plattsburg, 3-2.

?I felt bad for Matthew; he has wrestled well all year long,? Hill said. ?He would have had an excellent chance to medal had he not gotten hurt.?

A hard takedown in the third round wrestleback ended Chambers tournament as he was pinned by Caleb Slaughter of Seneca, 2:46.

Chambers? final season record was 27-11.

?We will miss Matthew next season,? Hill said. ?He is an excellent young man.?

Zach Plumb

Plumb also fell short of expectations, coming in as the eighth-ranked wrestler in the 160-pound class. Plumb finished the tournament with 2-2 record.

?Zach had a solid season even if he didn?t have the best tournament,? Hill said. ?He lost two tough matches, including a close, 11-10 lost in the third round of the wrestlebacks.?

Plumb lost his opening match to Blake Hohensee in Monett, 6-4. He bounced back to beat freshman Nick Castile of Herculaneum by fall, 4:20. In the second round wrestleback match, Plumb defeated senior Chance Baragary of Boonville, 7-4. Plumb then lost in the third round wrestlebacks to junior Jake Lloyd of Plattsburg, 11-10.

Plumb ended his senior year with a record of 27-8.

Trenton finished in 29th place overall with 15 points. Oak Grove won the Class 1 title with 225.5 points, followed by Seneca at 135 points and Lawson with 106 points. Richmond, coached by THS graduate John Daniels, placed fourth with 103 points.
