The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that work to replace the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad on Ninth Street will begin on Monday, weather permitting.

Columbia Curb and Gutter has been contracted to do the bridge replacement for approximately $2.3 million. Initially, the contractor will stake the the area and demolish the old Big A Auto Parts Store as well as the building that formerly housed the Grundy County Health Department.

Jeff Madsen, area engineer, said the new bridge will be wider and will provide sidewalks for pedestrians. He encouraged persons to avoid the demolition and construction staking areas, reminding motorists to exercise extreme caution during the bridge replacement and to choose alternate routes when appropriate.

MoDOT expects work on the project to be completed in November.
