With the scored tied at 52-52, Kurt Helton hit a pair of free throws to give Marceline the lead with 12 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs were able to get to the free throw line with about six seconds remaining, but were unable to to convert.
?We had a couple of chances late in the game,? Head Coach Richard Woods said. ?We missed a pair of free throws but got the rebound. We just were not able to put the ball back in the basket. Some nights it just isn?t meant to be.?
Trenton held Marceline to only two field goals in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Bulldogs to eat up the Tigers? seven-point lead. Trenton outscored Marceline, in the fourth quarter, 14-9.
THS played a strong second half but had a hard time containing Helton, who scored eight of Marceline?s 16 points in the third quarter and finished with 17 points.
?Our defense did a nice job except we couldn?t contain Helton,? Woods said. ?He scored eight points in a hurry in the third quarter.?
The Bulldogs trailed the Tigers in the first half, 29-26. Marceline was able to have some success putting the ball on the floor and driving to the basket.
?It wasn?t that our defense was poor, Marceline was just very quick,? Woods said. ?Our help man just couldn?t get rotated over fast enough to stop their dribble penetration.?
Jordan Ferguson led Trenton with 14 points. Trey Held and Kyle Bortell each chipped in with eight points. The Bulldogs fall to 6-6 overall and will travel to Chillicothe on Tuesday.
THS Girls
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs have won three of their last four games, with their only loss coming to Savannah, currently ranked second in Class 4. Trenton?s speed proved too much for the Lady Tigers as the Lady Bulldogs running attack wore down Marceline, which allowed THS to outscore the Lady Tigers in the second half, 40-28.
?I liked our balanced scoring, it really held with the team chemistry and our style of basketball,? Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said. ?Courtney Cox had a nice game off the bench with eight points and several rebounds.?
Trenton?s fast-paced style allowed the Lady Bulldogs to get several good looks at the basket in the first half. Trenton led by three points at the end of the first quarter, 12-9. THS tacked on two more points to their lead before halftime, making the score, 25-20.
?We shot well from the field by getting good looks at the basket,? Ockenfels said. ?Our transition game was effective and Amber Vandevender did a real nice job of distributing the basketball.?
Christina Woodard led the way for Trenton with 14 points. Lindsey Lattimore had 12 points and Krista Gondringer chipped in with 11 points.
?Lindsey was great from the free throw line, going 8-of-10, all in the fourth quarter,? Ockenfels said.
The THS girls improve to 8-5 overall and will travel to Chillicothe on Tuesday night.
