The Trenton High School varsity girls basketball team used consistent shooting and a quick defense in their 54-38 victory over Macon on Monday night.

After a strong first half, the Trenton boys could not get their offense in gear as they fell to the Tigers, 53-36.

Lady Bulldogs

Trenton was hoping for a strong game before heading to the road for three weeks. Trenton?s full-court press seemed to frustrate Macon early on, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to build a 17-8 first quarter lead. The two teams played even in the second quarter. Trenton went into halftime leading 28-19.

?We accomplished some key goals with a big win over Macon,? Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said. ?The girls followed the game plan and we played four good quarters.?

Trenton continued to exploit its speed advantage in the second half. THS outscored Macon 14-11 in the third quarter, and 12-8 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Tigers to a majority of the loose balls and rebounds. Trenton also got some key plays off the bench.

?Ivy Swank was a key player for us off the bench, playing great defense and scoring eight points, including two big three-pointers at key times in the game,? Ockenfels said.

Christina Woodard led the way for Trenton with 16 points. Lindsey Lattimore had nine points while Amber Vandevender and Ivy Swank added eight points. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 7-5 and will travel to Marceline on Thursday.

?We will try to take the momentum from this game onto the road with us,? Ockenfels said.

Bulldogs

The THS boys hung with Macon for two and one-half quarters until Macon junior Donnie Lester got hot behind the three-point line. Lester connected on four three-pointers in the second half to lead Macon to a 17-point win.

?The Lester boy really got hot in the second half,? Head Coach Richard Woods said. ?We led by as many as five points early in the the third quarter, but we just couldn?t slow down their outside game.?

The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, 12-12. Trenton?s defense kept Macon off balance throughout the first half and THS led at halftime, 20-19.

?Our defense played very hard in the first half,? Woods said. ?We did a nice job of getting to the boards. I really thought we were more physical in the first half.?

The Bulldogs led 29-24 with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter. The Tigers outscored Trenton, 13-2, and took a 37-31 lead into the fourth quarter. The Tigers then continued to put distance between themselves and the Bulldogs. The Tigers outscored Trenton in the fourth quarter, 16-5.

Lester led all scorers with 14 points. Joey Reynolds added 11 points for Macon.

Cary Sager led Trenton with nine points. Kyle Bortell had eight points and Wade Peters added six points. David Sager had six rebounds and Eric Hoffman chipped in with three assists.

The Bulldogs fall to 6-5 overall and will play Marceline on Thursday.
