Russell Glenwood Place Sr., an 80-year-old resident of Norwalk, IA, passed away on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003) at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, IA. Rev. Max Carmichael officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville.

Mr. Place was born on April 16, 1922 in Gallatin, the son of Minor Eli and Georgia Marie Gray Place. He was united in marriage to Anna Jean Mahoney on Feb. 2, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 23, 1995. Mr. Glenwood was raised in Lineville, IA and was a 1940 graduate of Lineville High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army-Aircorp. After he and his wife were married, they lived in Des Moines, IA for five years and in Cincinnati, OH for 11 years before returning to Lineville in 1962, where they were co-owners of Place’s Hy-Klas Grocery in South Lineville from 1962 until 1986. He moved to Norwalk, IA in the fall of 1995 to be closer to family. While living in Lineville, he was a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion and the Baptist Church.

Mr. Place is survived by one daughter, Veta Allen and her husband, Danny, of Cedar Rapids, IA; one son, Russell Place and his wife, Krista, of Norwalk, IA; four grandchildren, Scott Allen and Amy Weber and her husband, Brian, of Cedar Rapids and Russell and Leslie Place of Norwalk and her fiance, Dan, of Kearney, NE; one brother, Charles Place and his wife, Marva, of Oskaloosa, IA; and by nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Place was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; one brother, Bob Place; and one nephew, Charles Russell Place.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mercy Hospice. These may be mailed to the hospice at 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131-1651.
