Willa Gartside, an 83-year-old resident of Laredo, passed away at her home on Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002 at the Resthaven Mortuary in Trenton. Bro. Mark Peck officiated.

Mrs. Gartside’s grandsons, Eric Spencer and Stewart King gave the eulogy.

Kay Thomas was the organist and provided accompaniment for Bonnie Peck, who sang “Amazing Grace” and “The Way, The Truth, The Life.”

The pallbearers were Danny Spencer, Eric Spencer, Gary King, Stewart King, Phillip Gartside and Derrick King.

Burial was in the Resthaven Mortuary in Trenton.

Mrs. Gartside was born on Dec. 13, 1919 near Parcell in Nodaway County, the daughter of John and Nilla Miller Mayfield. On May 16, 1940 she was married to Gailand Perry Gartside at Bethany. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1994. After their marriage they lived and farmed at Sheridan, IA, Grant City, Pleasanton, IA, Chillicothe and Sheldon. They owned and operated a motel at Lamar for a few years. They moved to Drexel, then Mt. Moriah, before moving to Trenton in 1961. They had lived at Laredo since August 1976. Mrs. Gartside graduated from Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville in 1965 and taught school for over 30 years, last teaching in the Chula School District. She was a member of the Laredo Christian Church.

Mrs. Gartside is survived by one son, Greg Gartside of Green City; three daughters, Gail Gartside of Ash Grove, Janice King of West Cliffe, CO and Jean Spencer of Yakima, WA; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gartside was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Margie Hooker, Leona Codell and Rose Evans; and three brothers, Ivan, Orley and Elwin Mayfield.
