The Trenton High School wrestling teams picked up a pair of wins at Kirksville on Thursday.
The varsity defeated the Tigers, 39-31, while the junior varsity racked up six out of 11 wins in their match.
?This was a big win for us,? Coach Bill Hill said, ?This week we have really emphasized conditioning and technique, especially doing a better job of setting up our takedowns. I am pleased to see improvement in those areas. Our younger and less-experienced kids are really starting to put what we are teaching to use in their matches.?
Varsity
Four straight wins at 152, 160, 171 and 189 set up the Bulldogs to win the match. Sophomore Jesse Meek got things rolling with a technical fall win over Ben Pulliam, 22-7.
?Jesse?s win was definitely a highlight for us,? Hill said. ?He tech-falled Ben Pulliam, a returning state qualifier. Pulliam is an excellent wrestler but Jesse was outstanding and just completely dominated the match.?
Senior Zach Plumb followed Meek?s win by pinning Andrew Johnson at 160 pounds. Freshman Justin Anderson then won by technical fall over Austin Landwig, 17-0. Sophomore Cody McCollum defeated Colton Scott by major decision, 13-4. Forfeit wins by Kenton Kinney at 215 and Seth Cox at 275 put away the match.
Freshman Justin Hendricks got a big win for the Bulldogs in his 119-pound match, taking a major decision over Jordan Clarks, 18-6.
?Freshmen Justin Anderson and Justin Hendricks have both stepped it up from the Kids Wrestling (program) directly to varsity,? Hill said. ?Hendricks won by major decision and is now 5-1. Anderson got an impressive technical fall win and is now 4-2.?
At 125, senior Matthew Chambers decisioned Andrew Montgomery, 13-8.
Junior Varsity
Trenton got wins from Joe Blackburn, Mitch Briegel, Joe DeVorss, Dustin Haskins and Philip Elliott.
?Freshmen Mitch Briegel, Matt Miller and sophomore Joe Blackburn all impressed me with wins by pins,? Hill said. ?Senior Philip Elliott also got a fall in his first-ever wrestling match.?
DeVorss won by fall and Haskins scored eight takedowns to win.
The Trenton JV team is entered in the Maryville JV Tournament on Saturday.
The varsity will be at home on Thursday, hosting Carrollton in the THS gym.
