Suspects are being held in Mercer and Grundy counties following the shooting death of a Mercer County man Tuesday night.

According to Mercer County Sheriff Duane Hobbs, the investigation into the death began at approximately 11 p.m., Tuesday when Grundy County Deputy Eric McAllister received a phone call from a subject in Kansas indicating a person had been shot. Information was received that the body may have been moved to Grundy County. A search involving his department, the Grundy County Sheriff?s Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol began, with Grundy County Sheriff Greg Coon finding the body at about 7:30 a.m. today off Northeast 80th Avenue, just east of Highway 65. Sheriff Coon said the body had been placed on a brush pile and burned. Grundy County Coroner Tom Eads was called in to remove the body and efforts were under way to make a positive identification. As of press time, the victim?s identity had not been released.

Sheriff Hobbs said one person is in custody in Mercer County in connection with the shooting and Sheriff Coon said three persons, including one Grundy County resident and two subjects from Kansas, were expected to be charged in Grundy County with abandonment of a corpse, a class D felony. Names of those persons were not available as of press time since formal charges had not yet been filed.
