There will be more than good food and books available at this year?s Rissler Elementary School Chili Supper and Book Fair, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14 at the school, as parents will have the opportunity to purchase Rissler Spirit T-shirts, Hy-Vee coupon books and winter greeting cards, as well as have their child fingerprinted.
The evening will kick off at 4:30 p.m., with the book fair opening for parents and students to make purchases. A portion of the profits from the sale will go the PTO, with that amount depending on the amount sold. Chili will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, and will be served until 7:30 p.m. The eat-what-you-want, pay-what-you-want event has been one of the major fund-raisers for PTO throughout the past several years.
In addition, the Rissler Spirit T-shirts will be on display and can be ordered that evening, and parents may also purchase a Hy-Vee coupon book. The book costs $5, with $4 being donated to the PTO.
New items this year also include the sale of the Rissler Student Council winter greeting cards. The council recently held a contest, with students drawing winter scenes. Ten winners were chosen and their drawings have been made into winter greeting cards, which will be on sale for $10 for a box of 10 assorted cards. Proceeds will benefit the student council and its projects.
In addition, the Citizens Advocacy Group will be fingerprinting children for the Child ID program.
Melissa Purkapile, who is serving as the PTO president his year, said the organization exists to help provide support for the school and assist in providing items that are not funded through the school district. For instance, last year, PTO raised funds for the purchase of new playground equipment, replacing an outdated and unsafe structure at the school. So far this year, PTO has agreed to purchase a new 35 mm camera to be used by the yearbook staff, dictionaries for first grade students, a sound system for the gym, a scanner for the computer lab and a new cot for the nurses? room.
All patrons of the school district are invited to attend Thursday night?s event.
