Author and illustrator of children?s books, Gary Harbo, will be a featured artist at the Dorris Rider Art Gallery on Friday, Oct. 18.
Harbo, a resident of Eagan, MN, will be the first of what is hoped to be many guest artists to appear at the newly-developed Rider Art Gallery,l on the campus of North Central Missouri College.
Harbo teaches are lessons to over 25,000 elementary school children every year and will be in Trenton to participate in both the Missouri Day Festival and the International Reading Association meeting as well as conduct workshops at the Rissler Elementary School during the upcoming weekend.
Married to the former Barbara Dittberner of rural Laredo, the Harbos are the parents of four children, whom Harbo says have been his inspiration to the world of children?s books.
Harbo will be at the art gallery from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday and will conduct an art lesson as well as autograph any of his six picture books.
The gallery, located in the Frey Administrative Center, will be officially dedication at ceremonies earlier in the day. The public is invited to attend both events and there is no admission charge.
Harbo also plans to make a visit to the S.M. Rissler Elementary School Media Center on Thursday and Friday, where he will spend 50-minute sessions with second, third and fourth grade students, introducing them to cartoon illustration techniques. The kindergarten and first grade students will have a 25-minute art session with Harbo.
In addition to the visit, Rissler librarian Susan Ward said students will have the opportunity to purchase one of Harbo?s autographed books during the visit. Book order forms were sent out today.
The visit is being sponsored by the Rissler Media Center and funded with proceeds from last spring?s Scholastic book fair.
