The Trenton High School football team continued to roll on Friday night as the THS rushing attack destroyed East Buchanan, 55-20.
The Bulldogs racked up 29 points in the first quarter.
?We had good blocking, hard running and our quarterback made some good reads,? Head Coach Rich Johnson said. ?Our option game was rolling. Our offensive line dominated the game.?
Wade Peters scored on a three-yard run for Trenton?s first points of the night. Mario Gomez added the two-point conversion. Casey Beverlin scored next for Trenton, with Peters adding the two-point conversion.
Joel Peace scored next, giving the Bulldogs a 22-0 lead. Tyler Tolle rounded out Trenton?s first quarter scoring to run the Bulldogs? lead to 29-0.
?Offensively we had an excellent first quarter. It was very nice to have three running backs finish the game with over a 100 yards,? Johnson said. ?All of our backs had good performances. Peters did a nice job of taking what the defense gave him. But he has to do a better job of reading the inside (option).?
Peace finished with 150 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Peters had 182 yards rushing and scored a touchdown. Tolle collected 131 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns.
Trenton finished with 500 yards in total offense, including 502 yards on the ground. Trenton was minus-five yards passing on the night.
Peace and Tolle added two more Trenton touchdowns before the end of the first half. The Bulldogs? defense was able to shut down East Buchanan offense, allowing East Buchanan less than 40 yards of total offense in the first two quarters.
?Our defensive backs did a nice job of covering their receivers,? Johnson said. ?Our defensive line also put pressure on their quarterback and made him throw before he was ready.?
It seemed like the Bulldogs were going to pick up right where they left off when Scott Sharp returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, which ran the score to 48-0.
?No matter what a coach says or does, it is hard to keep a team focused when you are ahead 48-0,? Johnson said. ?Of course you would like the boys to maintain their focus and intensity, but that just didn?t happen.?
East Buchanan answered three plays later with a 36-yard touchdown pass. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession and East Buchanan scored two minutes later, cutting the THS lead to 48-14.
?We did not come out with our heads on,? Johnson said. ?East Buchanan came out and took advantage of our lull.?
Peace added another THS touchdown to push Trenton?s lead to 55-14. East Buchanan scored a third touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
?With our schedule it was nice to have a blowout,? Johnson said. ?It gave us a chance to get some of the younger kids in for several minutes.?
The Bulldogs improve to 4-0 overall and will head to Carrollton this Friday night. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
