Helen D. Akers, a 59-year-old resident of Gower, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Helen D. Akers, a 59-year-old resident of Gower, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Monday, Sept. 23, 2002) at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Gower. Burial will be in the Allen Cemetery in Gower.

Ms. Akers was born on July 25, 1943, the daughter of Harold and Ida Pike Akers near Gower, where she grew up and graduated from Gower High School. She attended Platte Guard College in St. Joseph. She continued living in Gower, where she made her home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gower. She enjoyed attending the Gower Goodtimers.

Survivors from this area include one aunt, Karen Prewitt, and one uncle, John Rice, both of Trenton. Ms. Akers is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Witt and her husband, Arthur, of Gower; one nephew, Charles Witt of Gower; two nieces, Joy Shaver of Easton and Mary Ray of Gower; seven great-nieces and nephews; two great-great-nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

Ms. Akers was preceded in death by her parents.
