The Trenton High School Bulldogs again flexed their physical dominance at the end of Friday?s night game at Cameron.
The Bulldogs outscored the Dragons in the second half, 38-7, on their way to a 42-14 win.
?I think the physical play of both our offensive and defensive lines begins to show in the second half of the ball game,? Head Coach Rich Johnson said. ?Winning two games is a great way to start the season.?
Early turnovers hampered the Bulldogs? offense. The Bulldogs lost two fumbles in the first quarter. The first turnover gave Cameron a short field to work with, allowing the Dragons to turn that THS mistake into seven points.
?We have to do a better job of taking care of the football,? Johnson said. ?In the first quarter we couldn?t even get the center-to-quarterback exchange.?
Penalties, fumbles and mental mistakes kept Trenton off the board in the first quarter. The Bulldogs finally broke through in the second quarter, with senior Joel Peace scoring both of Trenton?s touchdowns before halftime. The first touchdown was a five-yard run. Peace?s second touchdown came on a 15-yard run.
?We hurt ourselves in the first half,? Johnson said. ?This week we will focus on taking care of the ball.?
The Bulldog defense forced the Dragons to abandon the run almost entirely in the second half. The Dragons mustered only 48 yards running for the game. Trenton?s defensive line held Cameron in check for most of the contest.
?I was pleased with our play on defense. The defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage,? Johnson said. ?With the 10 games that we play, teams will not beat us with the pass alone. If a team doesn?t rush for 100 yards (against us), we will have a very good chance of winning.?
Casey Beverlin scored on an eight-yard run for the only touchdown in third quarter, making the score 20-7. Wade Peters scored early in the fourth quarter from two yards out and also ran in the two-point conversion to increase the Bulldog lead to 28-7.
Junior Andy Cox led the Bulldogs on two more scoring drives in the fourth quarter, handing off the ball to Jesse Ingraham, who scored on a 10-yard run to make the score 35-7. Cox then scored on a three-yard run late in the fourth quarter for Trenton?s final touchdown of the contest.
Cameron answered Trenton?s first score of the fourth period with a 30-yard touchdown pass.
THS finished the game with 441 yards rushing. Peace led the way with 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Bulldogs went to the air only three times and completed one pass for eight yards.
?We win football games up front. Our offensive line is very physical,? Johnson said. ?I am not concerned with our passing game. We will throw the ball when we need to throw it.?
The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 and will next host Lathrop on Friday night. The Mules roll into C.F. Russell with a 2-0 record. The Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back from a 35-7 drubbing a year-ago.
?I would hope getting beat 35-7 would motivate you to play hard,? Johnson said. ?Lathrop will get after you on both sides of the ball. They are a good football team. If we turn the ball over like we did this week, we will be in trouble. Lathrop will turn those mistakes into points.?
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at C.F. Russell Stadium.
