The Grundy R-5 Board of Education met in regular session Monday night, appointing a board member to fill an unexpired term and hiring two aides for the 2002-2003 school year.

According to Superintendent Paul Huey, the board appointed Connie Followwill to fill the unexpired term of Mary Smith on the board. Ms. Followwill will serve until the April election.

Board members heard a report from Librarian Janice Osborn, who said the card catalog is now on the computer and available in classrooms. Elementary Principal. Lisa Fairley said 99 students are enrolled in grades kindergarten through six, with 15 enrolled in preschool and three on the preschool waiting list. The preschool handbook was also approved.

High School Principal Phil Fox reported that 110 students are enrolled in grades seven through 12 and presented a list of students for approval in the School-To-Work Program. Those students include Jonathan Bingham, Robbie Gott, Heidi Griswold, Sam Lake, Annaka Meeker, Adam Reeter and Natosha Snidow. Bus routes were reviewed and approved, as was the Special Education Assurance Statement, the Secretary of the Board Report and the criteria and guidelines for the free and reduced meal program. The graduation date was tentatively set for May 18 at 2 p.m.

In other business, the board agreed to allow an AFLAC representative to talk with faculty and staff about supplemental insurance and discussed the ?No Child Left Behind? legislation with Huey, who pointed out its implications for the district.

Following an executive session, the board voted to offer contracts to Bonnie Peck to serve as library aide in the district and Patty Chipps to serve as an aide for a student and to work with the Title I program.

Also approved were bids for emergency work to the elementary school caused by rains while the roof was being repaired. Terry Eaton will be paid $3,500 to replace the ceiling, lights and some windows in one classroom and will be paid $3,200 to lower the ceiling and repair lights in a hallway that sustained water damage. Eaton will be paid an additional $1,000 to make repairs to the foundation and walkway at a house south of the school, which is owned by the district.

Huey said he feels the building will be ready for the start of school, which was postponed from Aug. 19 to Aug. 28.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 23, which is a change in the regular meeting date to allow Huey to attend a meeting of the Missouri Association of School Business Officers.
