Tri-County R-7
The Tri-County board accepted the resignation of a board members during its meeting at the school in Jamesport.
According to information provided by Superintendent Ron Garber, board member Tyann Wells submitted her resignation. The board will now advertise for the board vacancy and take letters of interest from district patrons. Also submitting resignations were Teresa Page and Betty Miller, both of whom were cooks. Jenny Cook was employed as head cook, with Valinda Lamp offered a contract as cook.
A tax rate hearing was held, with with the board setting the rate at $4.3929, which is the ceiling. The voter-approved tax rate for the district is $4.75.
In other business, the board approved the Annual Secretary of the Board report, ethics policies and the appointment of Garber as the Homeless Coordinator and the English as a Second Language Coordinator.
Items tabled included window bids, with a committee appointed to study the bids to hold a meeting on Aug. 22, and the Elementary Code of Conduct, which will also be discussed on Aug. 22. It was agreed that the district will continue the service agreement with Anderson Business for the copy machines.
The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12.
Newtown-Harris
The Newtown-Harris Board of Education accepted bids, set prices for softball admission and hired a special education aide during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Andy Anderson, the tax rate levy was set at $5 on the $100 assessed valuation. Admission prices for softball were approved and are $2 for adults and $1 for students.
Two bids were accepted by board members including a propane bid from MFA for 60 cents and Anderson-Erickson Dairy for milk and juice. Also approved were the bus driver list, substitute teacher list, discipline policies for students, faculty and staff, board policy updates and the faculty and student computer usage policy.
The board approved selected FFA members to attend the FFA National Convention in Louisville, KY on Oct. 30-Nov. 2. Three to four students will be chosen through an application and screening process to attend the event.
In other business, the board met with new teachers Dana Barnes, third and fourth grade, and Kineta Keith, vocational agriculture, industrial arts and FFA. Kim Houston was hired as a special education aide and Ms. Houston, Ron Hall and summer workers Sami Busick, Rachel Hall, Chad Abernathy, Wes Peterson and Cassey Reed were commended for their work on the buildings and grounds over the summer.
It was announced that teacher-in service days are set for Monday, Aug. 19 and Tuesday, Aug. 20, with classes to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Anderson said the HDC Conference fall meeting will be held Sept. 5 at Ridgeway.
The next regular school board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 11
