The Grundy R-5 Board of Education hired a counselor, discussed roof work and accepted the resignation of a board member during its meeting on Monday night.
Superintendent Paul Hughey said that Becky Walker, who has recently moved back with her family to Trenton from Iowa, has been hired for the full-time counselor’s position for the 2002-2003 school year. Linda Sapp, who had previously been a counselor at Chula, will work as a counselor on a part-time basis at the school, assisting Mrs. Walker, who has hours in counseling but is not yet certified in that area.
The board discussed roof work that is needed at the elementary school in Humphreys and, following the meeting, went to the facility to view concerns. The board plans to hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. this Thursday to meet with a contractor about the roof work needed at the school.
Mary Lynn Smith submitted her resignation as a board member, effective immediately. Hughey said that the board will follow the MSBA board policies in finding a replacement, which would include the board doing a search before naming a replacement to serve until the April board election.
With Mrs. Smith being the secretary to the board, it was decided to appoint Shelly Searcy as board secretary. She currently serves as Hughey’s secretary at the school in Galt.
Hughey announced that the R-5 School District has been officially notified of its accreditation under the Missouri School Improvement Program, under which the district was reviewed last year. The accreditation will be for a five-year period. The board also discussed forming committees to continue work on the district’s CSIP plan, which is part of the MSIP review.
The board approved the high school handbook as well as payment for the MAP tests in the areas of science and social studies. The ag exemption, allowing the district to start classes before Labor Day, was approved. The first day of classes will be Aug. 19.
The board set Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. for the tax levy hearing, which will be held at the high school. Job descriptions for individuals involved in the superintendent’s, principal’s and counselor’s offices were discussed as was back to school activities at the school in Humphreys. Bids were approved from MFA for fuel, Prairie Farms for milk products and Doug’s Market for bread products and it was decided to add Caller ID to the phone system.
Hughey informed the board that Robbie Koon has assumed the role of coordinator of the ITV cooperative of which the R-5 District is a part. The board also discussed concerns with heating and ventilation at the high school, renovation of a second grade class room, new carpeting for the elementary school library and painting in the Title I building.
The next regular board meeting will be on Aug. 19.
