Trenton Park Board members hired two lifeguards, discussed the possible replacement of the concession stand at the Ebbe Sports Complex, made plans for a Pony League Girls Softball Tournament and agreed to a proposal for the re-seeding of the infield at Grimes Field during a meeting held Thursday night.

At the request of Barb Grooms, manager of the municipal swimming pool, the board voted to hire Charla Fries and Ivy Swank to serve as lifeguards. The additional guards were needed due to one lifeguard quitting and others being ill or involved in various activities. It is possible that another guard will be needed in the future, as well.

Board members discussed the concession stand at the Ebbe Sports Complex, which is in poor condition. Board member Duane Helmandollar discussed the possibility of purchasing a pre-built ?shed-type? building that could accommodate the needs of a concession stand and possibility adding storage areas to the shed as well. It was noted that the current concession stand does not stay cool enough to keep soft drinks cold and that a new one could include an air conditioner to help with that problem.

In discussing the issue, board members noted that funds from the Ebbe Estate have been earmarked for a concession stand/restroom facility at the complex, which include Johnson and Griffin fields. The type of structure that had been discussed in the past was to be similar to the new concession stand/?restroom facility at C.F. Russell Stadium. That type of facility would be expensive and may require several more years of saving before the board could afford to have it constructed. It was suggested that the type of building Helmandollar was proposing could be used until a more permanent facility could be built and then could be used at another site within the park system. Board members decided to have the Grounds Committee pursue the idea further and to use the funds raised at this weekend?s Pony League Girls Softball Tournament to help defray costs of a new concession stand. That tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and will run throughout the day. Concessions will be available, with all proceeds going to the park department.

Board member Chuck Lankheit discussed the need to begin using the memorial funds donated in memory of various Trenton residents. He presented a rough draft of a brochure that could be given to those who would like to donate funds for a memorial bench to be placed on the new walk/bike trail route. The benches that have been suggested are made of vinyl plastisol and would be placed on a concrete slab to make them permanent. The approximate cost of a bench would be around $245.

In other business, the board met with North Central Missouri College Baseball Coach Bob Shields, who asked that the infield of Burleigh Grimes Field be re-seeded. Shields said there are several advantages to having the infield seeded and noted that it is a ?first step? in making the field look better, which in turn, will help attract ballplayers to the NCMC team. After discussion, it was agreed to seed the field, with the baseball program absorbing the cost of the seed and fertilizer and helping with the maintenance of the area during the ball season. Work is scheduled to begin as soon as the American Legion Blue Jays finish their season.

Don Scott, representing the Green Hills Assorted Scuba Personnel, was present at the meeting, updating the board on plans for the July 4 Celebration at Moberly Park. Board members also discussed back-to-school dances tentatively planned for junior high and high school students on Friday, Aug. 16, and Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Rock Barn. The events will be used as fund-raisers for the park department.

Park Superintendent Jason Shuler gave his report, noting that work is continuing on the roofing project at the Rock Barn courtyard and the church league games will begin July 9. Work on the walk/bike trail is continuing, with the first two inches of asphalt being laid.

The board met in executive session to discuss personnel, real estate and legal matters, with no announcement made.

The board?s next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
