The goal was exceeded by more than $4,000 during the annual Grundy County American Cancer Society?s Relay for Life, held Friday night and Saturday at Trenton.
Over $29,000 was raised during the event, which was held at C.F. Russell Stadium. More than 200 persons representing 14 teams participated in the fund-raiser, with monies being used to help fund ACS research, education, advocacy and service programs.
?We appreciate all the support we received from each of the teams as well as our sponsors,? said Terry Toms, co-chairman. ?We are especially grateful to the many volunteers and their families for all of their hard work to make this event happen.?
The team from Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments raised the most money in the event, $4,438, while Bill Baker from the Dockery Chapel Church team was the individual raising the most money, $612.
Wright Memorial Hospital was the team walking the mosr laps, 432 (108 miles) while Galen Owen and Vince Harris were the individuals walking the most laps, 120 (30 miles). Best campsite honors went to the Grundy R-5 School and Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments while Pamida had the best campsite theme.
The Team Spirit Award went to the Randall Owen team and Robb Duncan was recognized as the outstanding volunteer.
Selling the most luminaries was the team of Hy-Vee while Sandy Smith sold the most individual luminaries. The luminaria ceremony saw over 700 candles lit in memory of those who have lost the battle to cancer as well as in support of those still fighting the disease.
The event got under way at 6 p.m. with the cancer survivor walk with 86 participants. A team walk followed the survivors event. Several fun activities and entertainment were also held throughout the evening.
Teams entered in this year?s event included Pamida, Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments, Wright Memorial Hospital, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, Trenton Municipal Utilities/ Grundy County, PAR Broadcasting, Hy-Vee, Eniva, Grundy R-5 School, Galt Christian Church, the Randall Owens family, Dockery Chapel Church, the Church of the Nazarene and Eta Mu sorority.
Other sponsors for the event were ConAgra Foods Grocery Foods Group, the Republican-Times, US Bancorp, Citizens Bank and Trust, Farmers State Bank, Green Hills Superior Care, Inc. and PDQ Cleaning.
