Mary Jane Smith, a 99-year-old resident of Princeton, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2002 at the Princeton Care Center in Princeton.
Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. today (Monday, June 17, 2002) at the Ravanna Cemetery. Rev. Gary Ponder Williams officiated under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Princeton.
Mrs. Smith was born east of Mercer on July 21, 1902, the daughter of John Wesley and Ruth Anna Evans Stockman. She was united in marriage to John Ellsworth Smith on Sept. 19, 1920. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1975. She was raised in the Epworth Community, east of Mercer. After her marriage, she and her husband lived on a farm in Putnam County until 1940 when they purchased a farm in Mercer County in the Goshen community, west of Princeton. They moved from the farm to Princeton in 1974. She was a charter member of the Mercer County Garden Club, serving as its first president, and was a member of the Princeton United Methodist Church, where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Smith is survived by four daughters, Harriett Goodin and June Ulsrud, both of Princeton, Ruth Palmisano of Phoenix, AZ and Margaret Broyles of Bethany; 13 grandchildren, including Sheila Merrill, who was raised by Mary Jane and John in their home; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, John Donal Smith; one sister, Edna Birkland; and by seven brothers, John Wesley III, Lucien ?Jack? , Wynne, Tipton, Lewis, Lester and William Stockman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Princeton United Methodist Church or to the Mercer County Garden Club. Contributions may be mailed to the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Home at P.O. Box 316, Princeton, MO 64673.
