John Carter, an 82-year-old resident of Harris, passed away at 1:46 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville.

John Carter, an 82-year-old resident of Harris, passed away at 1:46 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the Payne Funeral Home in Galt. Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery in Harris with military graveside rites following.

A scheduled family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening (Wednesday, June 5, 2002) at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter was born on July 23, 1919 in Prescott, AR, the son of John and Sarah Hendrix Carter. He moved to Unionville as a small child. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was married to ?Livonia? Osie F. Breese on March 11, 1939 in Albia, IA. She preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2001. They lived most of their married lives in and around the Harris area. He worked as a farmhand in the Sullivan County area.

Mr. Carter is survived by 11 children, Billy Ray Carter of Trenton, Jimmy Lee Carter of Monett, John Jr. Carter of Gallatin, JoAnn Stark of Trenton, Sarah Holliday of Unionville, Betty Jean Loughhead of Unionville, Rosemary Kramer of Tooele, UT, Richard Delaine Carter of Trenton, Gary Carter of Ridgeway, Wanda Jane Lightner of Harris and Linda Ruth Carter of Harris; one sister, Doris Wolfe of Austin, TX; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers.
