Commencement exercises for the Trenton High School Class of 2002 were held Sunday afternoon at the Ketcham Community Center.
Stacy King, daughter of Wayne and Joy King, was named the valedictorian, and Bryan Anders, son of Paul and Linda Anders, was named the salutatorian.
Others named to the Top 10 were Dana Whitt, Jill Henderson, Amy Chapman, Rachel Arnold, Cassie Brown, Lea Ann Griffin, Clayton Anderson and Charlie Bacon.
In her address, Miss King, who plans to attend the University of Missouri, recited a portion of Baz Luhrman?s ?Everybody?s Free (To Wear Sunscreen).? The reading gave practical advice on life, such as ?Don?t worry about the future, or rather worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum? and ?Don?t waste your time on jealously. Sometimes you?re ahead, sometimes you?re behind. The race is long, but in the end, it is only with yourself.?
?You may take this advice, or simply let this go in one ear and directly out the other,? she concluded. ?As Dr. Holcomb said at baccalaureate, no one will remember any part of it anyway. So, congratulations and I?ll see you at our five-year reunion in 2007.?
Anders, who plans to attend Drake University next year, touched on the adversity the class, as well as the community, has faced this year, mentioning the deaths of THS supporter Bud Meek, former classmate Sarah Hoover and a 2001 THS graduate, Brad Lovell, as well as the events of Sept. 11, 2001. But through it all, he said, the class has been able to persevere. Even when there were disappointments, such as the injuries of seniors Seth Tabbert and Casey Hollingsworth, who were denied the chance to achieve their athletic goals this year, the class kept trying and the results were that each and every one of his classmates will be doing something worthwhile after graduation.
?Every one of us has a bright future,? he said.
Performing during the program were the Trenton High School Band, as well as the THS Combined chorus, who sang, ?Let The River Run.? Senior members of the choir performed ?Lonesome Road? with the entire class singing the Alma Mater.
