The Laredo R-7 Board of Education met Friday night, discussing plans for summer school and approving a raise for non-certified students.

According to Principal Shawn Schultz, the board heard a report from Jenny Murphy, seventh and eighth grade instructor, on activities in her classroom. She also discussed the need for new science textbooks, with Schultz to look into the possibility of obtaining a grant to help purchase new books.

Board members approved the school calendar for the 2002-2003 school year, which will begin on Aug. 21 and is scheduled to end on May 15. A decision on whether to hold preschool in the morning or the afternoon was tabled until the best time can be determined. Changes for the special education program were discussed, with no decisions made.

Summer school was discussed, with 18 students signed up so far, according to Schultz. The program will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 10 through July 9, with July 4 and 5 being school holidays. Students who are kindergarten-age through eighth grade are eligible to participate in the program and can sign up by contacting the school at 286-2225.

Budget issues were discussed, with board members still waiting to see how much state funding will be available, and board members discussed the possibility of using the air conditioner in the shed on the property across from the school. The shed was also part of a discussion on summer maintenance projects, as it is in need of paint.

Schultz said the board offered the physical education position to a candidate, but that person?s name has not been released because a contract has not been accepted. Non-certified staff members have been re-hired and were given a 6 percent increase in their salaries.

Schultz announced that kindergarten graduation will be held at 7:30 p.m., May 15, with eighth grade graduation set for 8 p.m. Elmer Gaug, a former instructor at the school, will give the commencement address to the eighth grade class. The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, May 17.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 14.
