The Trenton Park Board hired lifeguards, approved an agreement with the Trenton Quarterback Club for operation of the ballfield concession stands and agreed to hold a Mud-A-Thon during a meeting held Tuesday at City Hall.

The meeting began with a moment of silence in memory of the late Ben Moore. Mr. Moore, who died in April, had served as the board?s president. Memorial contributions in Moore?s memory are being made to the board.

On the recommendation of the Pool Committee, the board voted to hire 11 lifeguards, as well as a pool manager and assistant manager for the municipal pool. Muff told the board there was a ?fantastic turnout? of applications for the positions and that it had been a very difficult decision on who to hire. He also noted that all of the lifeguards from last season had re-applied.

The board then unanimously voted to re-hire Barb Grooms as pool manager and Julie Coon as assistant manager. Lifeguards hired include Samie Jo Blattner, Charla Fries, Casey Beavers, Casey Hollingsworth, Charlie Bacon, Courtney Cox, Adria Meek, Eric Lorenz, David Sager, Tyson Thomas and Marcie Harrington. Lifeguard salaries were frozen this year, Muff said, with new lifeguards earning $5.15 per hour and returning lifeguards earning $5.40 per hour.

The pool is tentatively scheduled to open Monday, May 27 and remain open daily until school starts. The pool will be open the weekends of Aug. 24-25 and Labor Day Weekend.

Following a lengthy discussion, the board voted to contract with the Trenton Quarterback Club for operation of the concession stands at lower Moberly Field, Upper Moberly Field and the Ebbe Complex, which includes Johnson and Griffin fields. The club will be paid $1,500 to run the concessions and will be penalized if a stand is not open during a game. The only change in the agreement is that the club will not have to run the concession stand at the Ebbe Complex during the Kiwanis Club Tournament this year.

Quarterback Club President Chris Hoffman said the organization had problems finding out when games were cancelled and when makeup games were scheduled during last year?s season and had hoped to receive an increase in the amount the club is paid. Board members said the budget is already approved and there are no additional funds available. It was also noted that the stand at Johnson/Griffin fields were not open on time for several games. Board members said they feel that if the stands are run well this year, an increase will be considered next year if the club still wants to continue in the agreement. It was agreed that better communication is needed when games are cancelled and/or rescheduled and Park Superintendent Jason Shuler said he will contact someone in the club when he contacts the media to let them know of cancelled games due to weather.

Board members agreed to hold a Mud-A-Thon on Saturday, June 1, with a rain date of Sunday, June 2. The event, which will be held at the grandstand, will be a fund-raiser for the park department. Funds will be earmarked for playground equipment in the park system. Additional information will be released in the near future concerning the event.

In other business, the board heard an update on the Rock Barn courtyard roofing project, which is about 65 percent complete. Board President Chuck Lankheit said volunteers are still desperately needed to help with the project, with work scheduled for Thursday evening and Saturday, weather permitting.

A Chillicothe couple, James and Joann Borton, were present at the meeting and asked for information on making a tree memorial donation in memory of J.B. ?Bill? Carver. They will be contacted by Lankheit in regard to the type of tree, which will be placed at Moberly Park, and the cost.

Shuler was given permission to hire summer help and presented a report of his activities during the month. He noted that he has used TBA equipment for sale at very reduced prices. The equipment can be seen at the Park Building.

Updates were given on the TRIM 2 Grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation and on TBA signups. Currently, 430 children are signed up to play, an increase from 403 last year. Umpires have been hired for the season. Shuler also told board members that the revenue from windscreens at the ballfields is $3,375 this year, an increase from $2,000 that had been budgeted.

The board voted to not allow any motorized vehicles on the walk/bike trail, that is currently under construction in the Eastside Park area. The action was necessary to allow the city council to pass an ordinance to that effect.

The next meeting will be a special meeting set for Wednesday, May 29, at which time final plans for the Mud-A-Thon will be made. The next regular meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 4 at City Hall. An election of officers will be held during that meeting.
