The Jamesport City Council swore in new members and reorganized for the coming year during a meeting Tuesday night at Jamesport city Hall.
The oath of office was given to Jerry Pierce and Virginia Hopkins, who were elected to the council during the April 2 city election. Ms. Hopkins was appointed as mayor pro-tem while Pierce was named street commissioner. Other appointments by the mayor included Leona Waterbury, financial advisory; and Ron Hager, cemetery board.
According to information from the meeting provided by City Clerk Carol Cass, several issues were discussed during the meeting, including liquor licenses, dog problems, the city?s water system and a barbecue cookoff.
The council, as recommended by the city attorney, voted to repeal the city?s alcoholic beverages ordinance, which had limited the issuance of package liquor and tavern liquor licenses to one each. The council was told that the ordinance was unconstitutional.
The council discussed dog problems and the need for additional public restrooms, but tabled the issues for further discussion at a later date. It was decided to have dumpsters available for use by city residents only during the months of April and May. Also approved was a request from the Chamber of Commerce to hold a barbecue cookoff during the festival on July 26-27, with a portion of Main and Grant streets to be blocked off from traffic.
The council heard a request for a liquor license from Mr. and Mrs. Ron Ledesma for a new restaurant the couple plans to open. The issue was tabled until more information was received.
The next meeting of the council will be on Tuesday, May 7.
