Tuition, fees and housing costs were increased by the North Central Missouri College Board of Trustees during a meeting Tuesday night in the Frey Administrative Center.

The increases will go into effect with the fall 2002 semester. NCMC President Dr. Walter Nolte noted that a shortfall in state funds has resulted in the need for an increase, which he noted would still require the college to have a ?lean? budget while still offering ?a quality service? to its students and the community.

?We will look pretty good (to students) if you look at what four-year schools are doing (with tuition and other rate increases) as well as the other two-year schools,? Dr. Nolte said.

In a comparison of community colleges in Missouri, the new tuition rate places NCMC as one of the lowest in the state, including having the lowest for in-district students. The per credit hour fee at NCMC, however, is the highest among the 11 schools surveyed, but Business Manager Mary Tredway noted that the NCMC fee includes both facility and student development charges where as other schools have other separate fees for those areas.

The new in-district tuition rate will be $44 per credit hour, which is $3 higher than the current charge. Out-of-district (Missouri) tuition will be $69, which is $6 higher, while the out-of-state rate will be $98 per credit hour, which is $6 higher.

Also increasing is dual credit tuition, which will go up $3 to $44 per credit hour for in-district residents and go up $4 to $76 for Missouri residents. Course-by-arrangement tuition will remain the same at $100 per credit hour.

Housing costs will increase by $40 to $1,630. There was no increase in the meal plan fee, which is $1,580. However, the college is getting ready to re-bid the food service contract, so there is a possibility that charge could change as well.

The per hour credit fee of $15 is $1 higher than is currently being charged. Those funds will go into general revenue as they do now and are used to help pay down the bonds for the Ketcham Community Center as well as for student development activities.

The board accepted bids for laboratory chairs and network cabling in the new addition at Hoffman Hall. Innovative Laboratory Systems, Inc. of Mission, KS will provide 100 laboratory chairs at a cost of $18,598 while Professional Networks and Cabling of Shawnee, KS will do the cable networking at a cost of $29,000. Both projects will be paid for with R-Tech funds.

Board President Doug Dible was given permission to sign off on other purchases for equipment that must be completed before March 28 because of enhancement fund spending requirements by the state. Additional lab chairs, tables and other equipment are being purchased for Hoffman Hall and the accounting department and two teaching stations are to also be set up.

The board accepted a bid from Mason Construction of Milan to the construction of a basement and the relocation of the Head Start facility at Milan. The bid was $107,426 and was the lowest of three received. Special grant funds and Head Start monies will be used for the project.

All votes taken were 5-0, with Betty Frances Hall being absent.

The board reviewed the report from the recent North Central Association visit, which led to NCMC receiving a 10-year accreditation designation.

An executive session was held for real estate and personnel matters. No announcement was made.
