A former Grundy R-5 student who left school to join the service during World War II will be honored by the school district with an honorary diploma.

During a meeting on Monday night, members of the R-5 Board of Education were told about plans to honor Fred Allen, who left school in 1943 to join the U.S. Navy. He served in the Seebees from 1943 to 1947, but never graduated from high school. Superintendent Dr. Gary Drummond said the school district was notified by state officials that Allen was eligible to receive a honorary degree through a program set up by the Missouri Legislature, allowing those who left school to serve in WW II to receive an honorary diploma from the district in which they attended classes. Allen now resides in Phoenix, AZ and Dr. Drummond said efforts will be made to honor Allen with some type of ceremony, if he is able. It is hoped he can return to Galt for the recognition.

The board voted to offer contracts to current administrators Phil Fox, who is the secondary school principal, and Lisa Fairley, who is the elementary school principal. Salaries are to be determined at a later date.

The board also accepted the resignation of music teacher Stephanie Woods, effective immediately, and elementary special education teacher Jennifer Schindler, who is leaving the district at the end of the current school year.

The board agreed to hire the firm of Davis, Lynn and Moots of Springfield to serve as the district?s auditor and awarded a three-year bid to Jostens to produce the school yearbook. The board also agreed to enter into a consortium for its reading recovery program. Also approved was the district?s program evaluations for the vocational and special education programs.

The board was told bids are being sought for the school district?s bus contract and that the district technology plan has received approval from the state for a three-year period. A review of the lunch program was given and it was decided to follow up on bids received for the district?s telephone service.

It was reported that attendance for the year is at 92 percent in the elementary grades and 95.08 percent in the secondary grades.

The board reviewed construction projects completed at the elementary school and toured the building to view the work.

In addition to personnel matters, the board discussed litigation and real estate issues during an executive session.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Monday, March 18.
