Charlie Bacon Finishes Four At State Wrestling Tournament

Trenton High School senior Charlie Bacon finished up his senior campaign with an impressive 36-4 record and a fourth-place finish in the 171-pound class of the Class 1A-2A Missouri State High School Activities Association Wrestling Tourna-ment, which concluded on Saturday in Columbia.

Trenton High School senior Charlie Bacon finished up his senior campaign with an impressive 36-4 record and a fourth-place finish in the 171-pound class of the Class 1A-2A Missouri State High School Activities Association Wrestling Tourna-ment, which concluded on Saturday in Columbia.

Bacon was one of three THS wrestlers taking part in the tournament. Junior Matthew Chambers came up one match short of medaling, ending his season with a 30-10 record. Junior Zach Plumb also qualified for the state tournament, but had his weekend cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Bacon

Bacon came into the state tournament as one of four sectional champions at 171 pounds. David Greathouse of Whitfield, David Griffin of Centralia and Will Sears of Oak Grove were the other three sectional titleholders.

Bacon opened the tournament with a convincing over Anthony Jones of Maplewood-Richmond Heights. The THS senior won the match by technical fall, 16-0.

Bacon lost in the quarterfinals to Carlos Torres of Kansas City O?Hara. 7-3. Torres would go on to beat both Greathouse and Sears on his way to the 171-pound championship title.

Bacon bounced back in the second round wrestlebacks as he dominated Kyle Ziemann of Cameron, winning by major decision, 14-6. He then decisioned Ben Woods of Monett in the third round wrestlebacks, 14-8, which put Bacon into the medal round on Saturday.

In the fourth round wrestleback, Bacon won by injury default over Griffin to move into the third-place match against Nick Jaros of Platte County, who was one of eight Platte County wrestlers competing for medals. Jaros pinned Bacon in the second period at 2:48, giving the THS senior a fourth-place finish in the tournament.

Chambers

Chambers opened the tournament at 119 pounds against the eventual state champion, Seth Dunlap of South Holt. Chambers lost by major decision, 18-6, knocking the THS junior into the first round wrestlebacks. Chambers pinned Trey Dutton of Principia, 2:14, then pinned Adam Beck of Higginsville, 3:58 to move into the third round of wrestlebacks on Friday night. Chambers? season then came to an end as he lost by decision Brandon Monger of Plattsburg, 4-0.

Plumb

Plumb?s tournament ended before it was able to get started as he injured his shoulder in his opening match at 160 with Chase Campbell of Pleasant Hill. Campbell advanced to the finals before being decisioned by Mark Wall of Oak Grove in the title match, 12-7.

Plumb was not able to come back in the first round wrestlebacks and had to default to Tyler Nichols of Gallatin. He finishes the season at 25-8.

Team Totals

Platte County won its third straight state title in Class 1A-2A. The Pirates slipped by Oak Grove in the final two rounds, finishing with 178.5 points while Oak Grove came in second with 177.5 points. Placing third was Lawson with 103 points. Richmond, coached by THS graduate John Daniels, finished in eighth place with 70.5 points. Trenton came in at 23rd place with 22.5 points.
