THS Wrestlers Qualify Six For Sectional Tournament
Entered in what could turn out to be the toughest 1A-2A district tournament in the state of Missouri, the Trenton High School wrest-ling team on Saturday ad-vanced six members to the sectional tournament and took fourth place as a team.
?This was an excellent district,? Head Coach Bill Hill said. ?Richmond, Lawson and Lexington are three of the best teams in the state. I think people will see that in Columbia when they all finish in the top 10 or possibly the top five.?
Richmond took first place with 198.5 points, Lawson was second with 197 points, Lexington was third with 166.5 points and Trenton was fourth with 96.5 points. The Richmond Spartans finished with five district champions, Lexington had four champions, Lawson and Marceline each had two champions and Trenton had one.
Charlie Bacon led the way for Trenton with a first-place finish at 171 pounds, defeating Marco Wright of Lexington in the finals, 6-3.
?Charlie wrestled very well all day long,? Hill said. ?Charlie is a great kid and I am very happy for him.?
The Bulldogs had two other wrestlers advance to the finals, Matthew Chambers at 119 pounds and Tyson Thomas at 135 pounds.
Chambers lost by major decision to Adam Burkhart of Lexington, 14-6.
?Chambers had a good day,? Assistant Coach John Jones said. ?He won his first match by technical fall and then pinned his way into the finals.?
Thomas pulled the biggest upset of the tournament by pinning the first seed, Matthew Collins of Marceline, in the first round. Thomas got to Collins with a pin in 0:39. Thomas lost in the finals by technical fall to Chance Minnick of Richmond, 15-0.
?Tyson did a great job in pinning the number one seed and then beat the number four seed to advance to the finals,? Hill said. ?That is a great accomplishment for him and I know he is excited about wrestling at sectionals.?
The Bulldogs are qualifying the same number of wrestlers as they did a year ago but, according to the coaches, the team has improved greatly. Joining Bacon, Thomas and Chambers will be Zach Plumb at 160 pounds, Casey Hollingsworth at 189 pounds and Seth Cox at 275 pounds.
Plumb lost a 6-5 decision to Jesse Dunkle of Lexington in the semifinals but bounced back to win his next two matches by pin to take third place.
Hollingsworth came back from a foot injury earlier this season to also take third place. His only loss came in the semifinals to Mike Blankenship of Lexington, who went on to win the 189-pound class.
?Both Zach and Casey did a nice job of bouncing back from tough losses to take third,? Jones said.
Rounding out the Bulldogs headed for sectionals is first-year wrestler Seth Cox. Cox lost to the 275-pound champion Bryce Klein in the semifinals and then pinned Jordan Circle of Wentworth Military Academy to advance to the third-place match. Cox was pinned by Josh Hoeppner of Lexington, but was able to advance to the sectional tournament with a fourth-place finish.
?It is pretty much unheard of for a first-time wrestler to advance out of districts,? Jones said. ?This was a really good thing for Seth?s confidence.?
Even though more wrestlers did not advance to the sectional, tournament the THS coaches were still pleased with the team efforts. Jesse Meek, Derek Todd and Tyler Tolle all saved their best match for the final match of the season.
?I think a lot can be said for our kids that didn?t get to move on. Derek, Jesse and Tyler all had excellent final matches, it just wasn?t enough to win,? Hill said. ?Michael Wagner, Brady West, Bryan Anders, Nate Udovich and Ryan Trombley all came to wrestle on Saturday; it just wasn?t to be for them.?
The sectional tournament is scheduled for this Saturday at Lexington, with the top four finishers in each weight class advancing to the State Class 1A-2A Tournament at Columbia Feb. 14-16.
