The Trenton High School girls played in the their ninth tournament championship game in three years on Saturday night, destroying Gallatin in the finals of the Hamilton Tourna-ment, 54-33.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Trenton?s stifling defense held Gallatin scoreless for the entire first period. Gallatin finally got on the scoreboard with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
?We jumped on them early,? Head Coach Quentin Albrecht said. ?Our defense allowed us to set the tempo. We forced them out of the things they wanted to do.?
Gallatin scored 14 points in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing Trenton, 24-14.
?The first three minutes of the third quarter is one of the most important times of any basketball game,? Albrecht said. ?We emphasize that period of the game. Whether you are ahead or behind, that stretch is key.?
The Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the third quarter as they turned up the defensive pressure. THS allowed only two points in the third quarter and outscored Gallatin, 17-2. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Gallatin in the fourth quarter, 13-7, and picked up their second tournament championship of the season.
?Our girls take a lot of pride in their defense,? Albrecht said. ?We have several girls that do things on the basketball court that won?t get their name in the paper but will win you basketball games. That is what it is about.?
Casey Beavers scored 16 points for the the Lady Bulldogs. Melissa Woodard chipped in with eight points and Katie Barnes added seven points.
?I think it is important to recognize Casey for winning the tournament MVP for the second straight year,? Albrecht said. ?That is a great accomplishment for her.?
?I really felt like Katie was in the running for tournament MVP as well,? Albrecht continued. ?If Casey hadn?t won, then Katie would have.?
Trenton improves to 17-3 overall this season. The Lady Bulldogs will host Kirksville on Tuesday night in the THS gym.
