The Spickard R-2 Board of Education met Wednesday night, offering a contract and discussing a renovation grant.

According to the board secretary, board members agreed to offer current Principal Ruth Ann Shipps a one-year contract to serve in that position for the 2002-2003 school year. The salary will remain the same at $30,000, however, the district will continue to reimburse Ms. Shipps for the costs of classes she is taking to obtain her principal?s certification.

The board discussed a renovation grant the district is seeking to make various improvements to the school building. An application for up to $100,000 is to be submitted to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which is disbursing the federal funds.

The board is in the process of revising the school policy manual, however, action was tabled until February as all the revisions have not been completed.

Ms.Shipps reported on several upcoming events, including the school?s participation in the Grundy County Spelling Bee on Feb. 28 in Humphreys. The seventh and eighth graders will participate in a quiz bowl at Chula on Feb. 19. The annual school basketball tournament will be held March 11-14.

Work is continuing by teachers on curriculum revisions in preparation for the MSIP visit to the school by state officials in October.

An executive session was held following the regular meeting, however, no announcement was made.

The next regular board meeting has been set for Feb. 27.
