Charles E. Walton, an 81-year-old resident of Emporia, KS, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at the Newman Regional Health Center in Emporia.

Charles E. Walton, an 81-year-old resident of Emporia, KS, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at the Newman Regional Health Center in Emporia.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Trenton. Pastor Jennifer Hughes of the Hodge Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post #919.

Mr. Walton was born in Trenton on Dec. 2, 1920, the son of Edward I. and Pauline Gregory Walton. He was a professor of English at Emporia State University since 1953. He had retired in 1991. He was a Presbyterian and veteran of World War II in the Marine Corps. During the war he was a spotter in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Walton served as former chair of the English Department at Emporia State University. He was creator of the English Deptartment Master of Arts program at ESU and also taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Mr. Walton was a member of the Modern Language Association, Medieval Academy of American, Central Renaissance Conference, Midwest Modern Language Association, the Audubon Society, University of Missouri Alumni Association, Renaissance Society of America, National Council of Teachers of English and the Malone Society.

Mr. Walton is survived by one cousin, Jane Davis of Reeds Spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles E. Walton Graduate Essay Award Fund with the ESU Foundation. These may be sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.
