Individuals who ?almost? have a college degree and are interested in taking Internet courses could soon hold that diploma, provided they take advantage of a new service offered by North Central Missouri College in Trenton.

Julie Hefley, associate dean of vocational and technical education, has been designated as the e-learning coordinator at NCMC.

?The service we offer is to help individuals find courses that will combine with their previous college work to meet associate degree requirements,? she said.

NCMC?s service is especially appropriate for those students who want to complete a degree on-line.

?Whether they are just a few courses away from a degree or want to complete a whole program via the Internet, we?ll do the leg work to find classes that meet their needs,? Mrs. Hefley said.

To earn an associate degree, students are required to complete a minimum of 15 credit hours from NCMC with at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Graduation requirements can be met through a combination of NCMC courses, transfer credit and credit obtained through nontraditional means.

?We see this as an opportunity to assist someone who has a variety of college hours but no degree,? Mrs. Hefley said.

NCMC offers the associate in arts transfer degree, the Associate in general education degree and the associate in applied science degree. More than 30 areas of study are available, ranging from agriculture and business to environmental technology and human services.

For the Spring 2002 semester, NCMC offers the following Internet courses with instructor permission: Math Fundamentals, Basic Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, English I and English II.

Another way for students to earn college credit is through the Experiential Credit program at NCMC. Experiential Credit is awarded in lieu of enrolling in a course when a student demonstrates required competencies through assessment procedures outlined by an NCMC faculty member participating as the Experiential Credit sponsor. Tuition is based on the course-by-arrangement fee.
