Edith Ethel Nickell, 89, a resident of Lineville, Ia., died Oct. 18, 1999 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Ia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, Ia. Rev. Max Carmichael and Rev. Leroy Perkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville.
Open visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. A family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Mrs. Nickell was born on April 5, 1910 in Decatur County, Ia., the daughter of James Earl “Boom” and Fannie Fern (Bennett) Shockey. She was married on June 2, 1928 to Ernest Franklin Nickell. He died on April 7, 1985.
Mrs. Nickell lived in the Lineville area for most of her life, except for eight years when she and her husband lived in Illinois. She was an active member of the Lineville United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Embroidery Club of Lineville.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joana and Stanley Bettis of Motley, Mn.; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Nickell of Lineville, Ia.; two brothers, William Shockey of Kansas City, Ks., and Frank “Bud” Shockey of Independence; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Nickell was preceded in death by a son, Jay Nickell; a grandson, Dennis Nickell; two brothers, Kenneth and Dean Shockey; and three sisters, Iona Fern Shockey, Viola Shockey, and Genevieve Russell.
