The 15th Annual Missouri Day Festival got under way Thursday night with opening ceremonies held at the First Baptist Church.
Dr. John Holcomb served as master of ceremonies for the event, which included the crowning of Little Miss and Mister Trenton and the announcement of the winners in several contests.
Shelbi Stimpson, daughter of Debbie and Joe Stimpson, and Aaron Maberry, son of Robin and Brandi Maberry, were crowned Little Miss and Mister Trenton during the festivities. The two, who were chosen through a penny-a-vote contest, will represent the Miss Trenton Area Scholarship Pageant throughout the year and participate in Saturday’s Missouri Day Festival Parade.
Winners of the costume contest held at area schools were also announced and included the following:
First Rissler judging – Tyson Blattner (Mark Twain), first; Kara Ricketts (Laura Ingalls Wilder), second; Hunter Hanes (Tom Sawyer), third; and Taylor Cox (Emmit Kelly), honorable mention.
Second Rissler judging – Ashley Chapman (Carrie Rogers Clark), first; Kylie Slater (Laura Ingalls Wilder), second; and Laura Chapman (Bertha Shertz-Trenton physician), third.
Pleasant View R-6- Ronnie Brock (Mark Twain), first; Carson Hill (Daniel Boone), second; and Aaron Smith (Laura Ingalls Wilder), third.
Grundy R-5 – Libby Tunnell (Becky Thatcher), first; Nathan Curtis (Joseph Pulitzer), second; Steven Curtis (Thomas Hart Benton), third.
Laredo R-7 – Logan Epperson (Daniel Boone), first; April Ross (Susan Blow, first kindergarten teacher), second; and Kalyn Bethards (Scott Joplin), third.
A yard decorating contest was also held with the yard of Cindy and Dave Jennings at 1706 E. Seventh St., taking first place, while the yard of Betty Brittain at 1408 E. 12th St., took second place.
Lockridge, Constant and Conrad earned first place in the window decorating contest with Ivy Nook Floral taking second place.
Weekend events will start at 5:30 a.m., Saturday with the Masonic breakfast and the parade at 8:30. Events will be held in the Rock Barn and downtown areas on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the activities already announced, there will be children’s games at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, at Griffin Field. In case of inclement weather, the games will be moved inside to one of the open areas in the Show-Me Pavilion.
