John Rice To Present Museum Program
John Rice of Trenton, who returned home May 13 from a two-week mission trip to Liberia, West Africa, will give a slide-illustrated report of his experience at 2 p.m., Sunday, at the Grundy County Museum.
Rice was one of an eight-member team of American engineers and architects who were guests of the christ’s Victory International Missouri of Monrovia, Liberia. The team was in the capital city to assist in Liberia’s reconstruction after seven years of civil war.
The volunteers represented Engineering Ministries, based in Colorado Springs, Co. They are doing master planning for a school, church, orphanage, library and book store for the mission, which had purchased a two-acre site in Monrovia and a 12-acre site 45 miles east of the capital.
Rice, a retired water resource engineer, is working with another team member to design water systems and waste water treatment systems for the two sites. The EMI services are free of charge and available to any Christian ministries geared toward meeting the needs of low income persons.
Rice noted that while the civil war is officially over, the area he saw is covered with road blocks and check points manned by guards and soldiers with semi-automatic weapons.
The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The new calendars for 2000, featuring drawings of Grundy County area sites, are also available in the gift shop.
Hostesses for September are being provided by the Wesley United Methodist Church women, the RSVP and board members Marian McCarty, Ellen Dolan and John Rice.
