Trenton R-9 School officials got some very good news today as enrollment for the first day of classes is up some 33 students from a year ago.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Lowry said that 1,262 students were on the rolls when classes started this morning, with all three schools reporting increases in student population.
Rissler Elementary School has 547 students enrolled as of today, which is five more than last year. The Adams Middle School count is up 11 students at 297. Trenton High School has the biggest jump of students, 17, as 418 reported for the first day of classes.
The largest class is the junior class, with 118 students, while the third grade class is the smallest at 79.
Enrollment, by grades, includes kindergarten, 91; first grade, 94; second grade, 97; third grade, 79; fourth grade, 98; fifth grade, 87; sixth grade, 92; seventh grade, 96; eighth grade, 109; freshmen, 107; sophomores, 98; juniors, 118; and seniors, 95.
Dr. Lowry said things seem to be off to a good start, reporting a smooth transition in areas where changes have had to be made because of pending construction projects.
“Today has been a very good first day and we appreciate the cooperation of everyone in helping us get off to such a positive year, particularly with the changes that have and will be taking place,” he said.
Dr. Lowry added that those changes involving the construction projects planned at Rissler School and the new middle school work near the high school should come to fruition next week as the district’s architects will have construction documents ready for approval by the board of education. The board is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for the annual tax levy hearing and Dr. Lowry said representatives from Frangkiser Hutchens are scheduled to be at the meeting to present the documents to the board. A tentative schedule will also be presented to the board at that time in regard to the time frame of receiving and approving bids, which Dr. Lowry said should come at the Oct. 12 board meeting. It is hoped that all bids can be received by Oct. 7. A date for the pre-bid conference for contractors is tentatively planned for Sept. 28, he said.
