Classes began in two area school districts today, with enrollment seeing a downward trend.

At Newtown-Harris, the first day enrollment was 121 students in grades kindergarten through 12, down seven from last year.

The largest class is the ninth grade, with 13 students, while the smallest class is the 10th grade, with six students. Elementary enrollment is down seven students to 66, while the secondary enrollment remained steady at 55 students.

Enrollment, by grade, includes kindergarten, 8; first grade, 10; second grade, 9; third grade, 12; fourth grade, 8; fifth grade, 10; sixth grade, 9; seventh grade, 10; eighth grade, 10; freshman, 13; sophomore, 6; junior, 8; and senior, 8.

At Harrison County R-4 School at Gilman City, enrollment was 151, which was down 10 students from last year.

The largest class this year is the sophomore class with 19. The fifth grade class of four is the smallest.

Enrollment, by grades, includes kindergarten, 6; first grade, 11; second grade, 14; third grade, 10; fourth grade, 10; fifth grade, 4; sixth grade, 11; seventh grade, 9; eighth grade, 14; freshman, 16; sophomore, 19; junior, 13; and senior, 12.

Other opening dates for area districts include Monday, Aug. 23, Tri-County and Grundy R-5; Tuesday, Aug. 24, Pleasant View R-6; Wednesday, Aug. 25, Laredo R-7 and Princeton R-5; Thursday, Aug. 26, Trenton R-9; and Tuesday, Sept. 7, Spickard R-2.
