Trenton voters will go to the polls Nov. 2 to decide on a one-half cent sales tax that would be used to fund the park department and stormwater work.
During a meeting this morning, the Trenton City Council voted 8-0 to place the issue on the ballot. In addition to establishing the tax, the proposal also calls for the repeal of the property tax now being assessed for the park department. That tax would still be collected this year if the measure is approved and the sales tax collection would not start until April 1, 2000.
City officials are estimating the sales tax to generate approximately $300,000, with three-eighths of the tax, or $225,000, going to parks, while the remaining one-eight, $75,000, would go for stormwater work.
