The Spickard R-2 Board of Education has received a preliminary estimate of the cost to repair a basement support wall that collapsed last week at the school.
According to Board Secretary Nancy Stewart, a rough estimate has been given of $100,000, which would include repair of the wall only. Mrs. Stewart said one reason the cost is so high is that a flue that runs up the center of the building would have to be removed, which would be a difficult process. Mrs. Stewart emphasized there is still more assessment to be completed and if the board should decide to repair the building, a determination would have to be done to see what other structural damage was caused by the collapse.
Mrs. Stewart said last week that even if board members decide to fix the building, it will not be ready for the start of classes in August.
The board will meet at 7 o’clock Monday at the Chuckwagon Cafe in Spickard. A meeting with members of the community will be scheduled at a later date.
