Give members of the Lions Gold team a lot of credit. They beat a Purple team that included Gallatin’s Tray Whitt and Matt Adkison, Mid-Buchanan’s Matt Grove and King City’s Brian Hodge and Adam Johnson.

Grove, headed to Western Illinois this fall on a basketball scholarship, outdueled Princeton’s John Peer in the scoring department, but Peer’s Gold team captured an 81-76 victory in the 8th Annual District 26F Lions All-Star Basketball Classic held Saturday night at Northwest Missouri State University. Grove scored a Classic record 25 points but the Purple team never led in the game despite outscoring the Gold team in each of the final 3 quarters of play.

Gallatin’s Jill Wilkinson and Kelly Waterbury took part in a record-setting effort by the Purple girls as they defeated the Gold all-stars, 94-86, in a fast-paced, give-and-take contest. The Purple girls all-stars set new overall Classic records for scoring, most free throws made (22) and most 3-point field goals (8), and set a new Purple team mark for most field goals (32). The losing Gold team notched a new overall record for most field goals (36) and a new team record for scoring.

Waterbury scored 3 points for Purple on a field goal and free throw. Wilkinson did not score but grabbed a pair of rebounds and picked up a steal. Tri-County’s Christy Shuler scored 10 points for the Gold team.

The Purple boys team played out of sync most of the night. Whitt and Adkison each pulled down 6 rebounds for the Purple squad, which won the battle of the boards, 54 to 44. However, the Purple all-stars combined for 26 turnovers compared to only 8 for the Gold team. Whitt finished with 13 points and Adkison added 2 points from the free throw line. Both Bulldogs started for the Purple team.

Derrick Iddings of North Daviess (Gold) and Drew Dixon of Tri-County (Purple) did not score in the contest. Dixon tallied 3 assists for his team.

Peer ripped the net for a team-record 20 points for the winning Gold squad. Grove, in addition to setting a new overall scoring record, tied the existing record for field goals (9) and most 3-point field goals (3).
