Trenton shot just 22 percent from the field, turned the ball over 18 times and allowed the Tigers 12 offensive rebounds as things spiraled out of control early.
“We did not shoot the ball real well,” Trenton coach Corbin Coe said. “We were 4-for-25 from three and 7-for-25 inside, so we struggled to shoot from everywhere tonight. Marceline shot extremely well and they were able to get every second-chance point and things like that. It was just kind of a combination of everything going right for them and nothing going right for us.”
Marceline opened the game on a 10-0 run and would lead 24-7 in the first quarter before Trenton closed the first frame with a 5-0 run to trim the lead to a dozen points. Marceline again threatened to run away early in the second quarter, but a pair of Brycin Loyd three-pointers pulled the Bulldogs to within 10 points. From that point on, however, it was all Marceline.
Trenton could not get shots to fall as the ball rattled out after being well below the cylinder multiple times for the Bulldogs. Marceline, meanwhile, was banking in three-pointers and by halftime the deficit was 44-22.
The lead continued to grow as Marceline led 60-31 after three before shutting Trenton out in the fourth on the way to the win.
Marceline for the game hit 12 three-pointers, shooting the ball at a 57 percent clip from the outside.
Loyd led Trenton with 12 points and Chase Otto added 10. Jaren Whitney followed with four points, six rebounds and three assists and Gavin Roeder had three points and three steals. Two points from Royce Jackson rounded out the Trenton total and the junior forward had nine rebounds as well.
With the loss, Trenton fell to 1-4 overall on the season. Things don’t get any easier for the Bulldogs tonight (Friday) as they play host to the Chillicothe Hornets. Action tips off following the girls contest between the two schools, which is scheduled to begin at 6 o’clock.
