The Grundy R-5 Board of Education increased salaries for the 2019-20 school year during a meeting on Wednesday night at the school in Galt.
According to Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board voted to increase the base salary for a first-year teacher by $800 to $30,000 a year. This is a 2.75 percent increase on the current base. The board also allowed certified teachers to move on the salary schedule based on experience and continuing education.
In addition, approval was given to a 2.75 percent increase in salaries for all non-certified staff as well as a 2.75 percent increase for extra duty pay. The total cost to the district will be $34,000.
The board approved the purchase of a 2014 54-passenger school bus from the Meadville R-4 School District for $23,000. Also approved were bids for milk from Prairie Farms Dairy, bus fuel from MFA at three cents below the pump price, propane from MFA at $1.13 per gallon and local food items from Galt Hometown Grocery. These were the only bids received.
The board reviewed the preliminary 2019-20 budget, but took no action, and received an update on MAP and end of course testing. Recognition was given to elementary students of the month, the artists of the month, Wayne Baxter for qualifying for sectional track in the triple jump, the FFA Farm Management Team for finishing third at state, Robert Urich for earning a 36 on his ACT test and the track teams for their finishes in the conference track meet. Several organization donations were also mentioned.
The board accepted the resignations of Kelly Ott as speech therapist, Tiffany Carver as high school girls softball coach and Jessica Parsons as junior high and high school track coach. Following an executive session, the board voted to hire Steve Wells as varsity boys basketball coach, Jessica Webb as high school cheer sponsor and Tasha Wyant as full time math teacher in grades seven through 12 (she is currently a part-time math instructor). Also hired was Anne McDonald as a part-time speech therapist.
The next meeting of the board will be at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11 at the school in Galt.
