Pool Opening Date Pushed Back One Week; Mudcats Returning To Trenton July 10

Mar 7, 2019 | Articles

The wintry weather that has played havoc with the school schedule is now affecting the opening of the Trenton Family Aquatic Center.
TFAC Manager Alexis Whitney met with the Trenton Park Board during its regular monthly meeting held Wednesday evening at city hall and said that with the last day of school being pushed back to May 24 due to days missed for inclement weather, the opening of the aquatic center will have to be delayed until Friday, May 31. Ms. Whitney, a teacher at Rissler Elementary School, said she would not have time prior to the traditional opening of the pool on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend to get in and get things done, such as cleaning. In addition, the lifeguards, most of which are high school students, will not be available prior to Memorial Day to help get the pool ready or to attend the required orientation and training sessions.
In addition, Ms. Whitney said she will start advertising soon for a manager trainee to work at the TFAC this summer and move into the manager’s position for the 2020 season. Ms. Whitney informed the board last year that the 2019 season will be her last as manager. The board plans to hire a manager trainee to learn the job this summer so they can hit the ground running next year and board members emphasized that this person would need to be willing to commit to being the manager for the 2020 season. In another pool-related item, board members learned that the lily pads that had been sent to Florida for refurbishing have arrived and are in great shape.
Doug Doughty, general manager of the Chillicothe Mudcats baseball team met with the board and was given approval to hold a Mudcats game at Burleigh Grimes Field on Wednesday, July 10. The MINK League team will play a league rival, the Nevada Griffons, that night. Doughty said last year’s game held in Trenton drew a large crowd and he indicated that there might be the possibility of holding another game in Trenton at some point. A North Central Missouri College baseball player, Logan Eickhoff from Omaha, NE, is a member of the Mudcats as is a Carrollton man, Brett Pierson, who plays for Southern Illinois University.
In other business, the board tabled a discussion of the budget due to the change in sales tax revenue that will occur with the closing of ShopKo. The Finance Committee will meet to revise its revenue figures and see how that affects the budget. Board members also met with Jackie Soptic, representing the Trenton Rotary Club, who asked for information on the handicapped accessible swing that was purchased with funds from a grant received by the club a couple of years ago. She said the club is needing that information as part of another grant application to obtain funding to build a storage building for the Bright Futures Program. Board President Duane Helmandollar said he would get that information to her within two weeks.
Board member Gary Schuett, who is on the Grounds Committee, said he has been contacted about a grant through the Missouri Department of Conservation to plant native grasses, shrubs and trees and Park Superintendent Jason Shuler gave his monthly report to the board, indicating the new playground unit for Moberly Park has been delivered and will be installed this spring. He said renovations continue at the Burleigh Grimes Field restroom facility, with the final items to be installed this week, if possible. The park department has been assisting with the forming and pouring concrete for the new asphalt plant and has been doing snow removal at the Public Safety Complex, Rock Barn, walking trail, Eastside Park parking lot, Upper Moberly Park parking lot and around the airport hangars and fueling station.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at city hall.
