In the past two years at Trenton High School there have been a lot of banners hung on the wall in the gym for district and conference championships. Of all the success the school has had in the two-year stretch, however, only the boys tennis program has secured back-to-back district championships.
The Bulldog tennis players made that reality on Wednesday at the THS tennis courts when Trenton shut down Richmond in the district championship dual with a 5-0 victory.
The top-seeded Bulldogs’ second consecutive district championship was never in doubt as Trenton opened the dual with a sweep of doubles play. Nick Shields and Gabe Swann won 8-1, Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton won 8-1 and Wyatt Neal and Jeremy Elliott won 8-0.

Nick Shields hits a backhand winner during his doubles match with Gabe Swann against Richmond. Shields and Swann scored an 8-1 win in the match and Trenton would take the district championship dual, 5-0.

When the action turned to singles, Trenton again put the dual away in the first two matches to be completed. Swann picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win and Neal scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the championship. The remaining singles matches were stopped in progress once Trenton reached its fifth victory.
“I’m very proud of my team and what they have accomplished so far this season,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said. “Bringing home another district title was a big goal for us at the beginning of the season, which our boys were determined to make that happen. It was a great win and now we go on to the team sectional.
“Richmond was a great opponent with a lot of class and I congratulate them on making it to the district final.”
With the win, Trenton improved to 15-3 overall on the season.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will be in individual district action this weekend at Excelsior Springs. The next team competition for Trenton will come on Saturday, May 19, when Trenton takes on defending state champion Pembroke Hill in sectional action. The time and site for that dual have yet to be determined.
“This weekend we will do the individual portion of districts in Excelsior Springs,” Sager said. “We hope to be just as successful there as we were today. It’s a great day to be a Trenton Bulldog.”
