A run to the Show-Me Showdown, conference and district championships and a school record 27 victories. The Trenton High School girls’ basketball team’s 2016-2017 season was a historic one for the program and one worth celebrating.
On Thursday night in the THS commons, the team did just that.
Trenton held its girls basketball banquet honoring the 15 members of a team that captured the hearts of the community on the road to the first Show-Me Showdown in program history.
Trenton’s 27-5 record over the course of the season saw the Bulldogs win a district championship, the first since 2000, and only the second in school history. They also took the Grand River Conference championship, winning the GRC East Division with a perfect 7-0 mark before topping Stanberry in the championship game for the overall league title. Trenton also captured tournament championships at Gallatin, Lawson and Hamilton.
Individually, four team-voted awards were given out on the night. Whitley Richman was voted the most outstanding player, Ainsley Tolson was voted the most dedicated player, Mykah Hurley was voted the top defensive player and Ashten Whitaker was voted the most improved player.
Tolson also received the leading scorer award and Richman won the leading rebounder award winner. Tolson was awarded for leading the team in assists and Hurley received the award for having the most steals. Coaches Awards were presented to Sidney Lynch and Ashten Whitaker.
Trenton has received a wealth of postseason honors and they continue to roll in. Tolson was named to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s All-State team and she was joined by Richman on the MBCA All-District team. The two were also first team All-Grand River Conference selections with Richman being picked unanimously. Salem Croy and Hurley were both named to the All-GRC second team.
Tolson and Richman were both named to the KMZU Dream Team with Tolson being named the KMZU Class 3 player of the year. She was also the Hamilton Tournament MVP and a member of the All-Gallatin and All-Lawson Tournament teams as well and earned a spot on the KKWK All-Star Team. Richman was the Gallatin Tournament and Lawson Tournament MVPs, named to the NCMC Holiday Hoops All-Star Team and KKWK All-Star Team. Sidney Lynch was also placed on the All-Gallatin Tournament Team.
