The Trenton High School wrestling team was at home for the final time this season on Tuesday night, suffering a 51-21 dual loss to Chillicothe on senior night.
The dual got started at 138 pounds, where Tyler Warner was pinned. Lucas Clark was pinned at 145 and Trenton was open at 152, putting the Bulldogs in an 18-0 hole right off the bat.
The Bulldogs got on the board at 160, where senior Mason Mounce made the most of his final home match, winning by fall. The win was a milestone for Mounce as it marked his 150th career victory with the Bulldogs.
“Senior Mason Mounce picked up his 150th career win tonight, which is a spectacular accomplishment,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “Mason joined a very elite group of wrestlers in Trenton history. I am very proud of how hard Mason has worked to accomplish this goal.”
Following Mounce’s victory, Thomas Mack, another Bulldog senior, scored a 7-1 decision victory at 170 and Trey Shields won his 182-pound match by fall. This brought Trenton to within three points of the Hornets.
“Thomas Mack went out and wrestled a great match for an important win tonight,” Bacon said. “Thomas controlled the whole match and just looked really tough in every position.
“Trey Shields also got a big win for us tonight. He came out, got the first takedown, and locked up a cradle for the pin. Trey looked very good in every position.”
The dual was nearly all Chillicothe from that point, however. Seniors Nick Gass (195), Jeramiah Chipps (220) and Terrin Ellis (285) all suffered losses, Gass by an 8-1 decision and Chipps and Ellis by falls.
“Nick Gass and Jeramiah Chipps wrestled very tough matches,” Bacon said. “They both came out and gave it 100 percent, but fell short. Terrin Ellis had a tough night at heavyweight, which was a throwing battle at first. Terrin’s opponent was able to get a reversal on him and turn him to his back for a pin.”
Trenton and Chillicothe traded wins by forfeit as the Bulldogs were open at 106 and Brendon Johnson had no Chillicothe opponent at 113. Daniel Rodriguez lost by fall at 120, Eric Lovett lost by a 17-6 major decision at 126 and Drew Rorebeck was defeated by an 8-2 decision at 132.
“It was a tough night for us as we took on a very good Chillicothe team,” Bacon said. “Even though it was a tough loss to take, I thought the boys pushed the pace and wrestled hard. One very positive thing I saw was that we were in great physical shape and were able to wear our opponents down quickly.”
The dual loss dropped Trenton to 6-5 on the season in dual action.
Trenton will look to regain some momentum following the loss as the Bulldogs travel to Stanberry on Thursday for a quad that also includes Rock Port and Hamilton. First matches for the quad are scheduled for 6 p.m.
