Maxine I. Johnson, a 93-year-old resident of Alexandria, VA, died at Goodwin House in Alexandria on Wednesday, July 9, 2014.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chicago, IL. Zimmerman and Sandeman Funeral Home of Oak Lawn, IL is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson was born on March 2, 1921 in Humphreys, the daughter of Ellsworth and Ora Briddle Ingraham. She was raised on the family farm near Humphreys, attended the Whaley rural school, graduated from Humphreys High School and later from the Chillicothe Business School. She worked in St. Louis and later in Chicago as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II.
She was married on Nov. 3, 1945 in Chicago to Robert Edward Johnson, who preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1986. They lived in Evergreen Park, IL, then moved to Orland Park, IL in 1976, where she lived until moving to Goodwin House in 2001.
She worked at Morgan Park Academy and Morgan Park Baptist Church before retiring in 1986. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Evergreen Park and was active in church circle groups. She and her husband were also active in the Horizons Fellowship Group. They also joined the Orland Park United Methodist Church, where she remained involved until moving in 2001.
The couple were the parents of two sons, Richard and his wife, Mary and Martin and his wife, Donna. They also had four grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two brothers, William J. (Nila) Ingraham of Trenton and Kenneth P. (Lorea) Ingraham of Branson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
