The Board of Public Works of Trenton Municipal Utilities held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening at Trenton City Hall and heard several reports.
The board reviewed the income statement for the three departments of the utility for the period ending March 31. Board Chairman Robert Day expressed his concern with purchased power costs increasing by 21.8 percent in the electric department during the current fiscal year. The department showed a loss of $65,553 for the month of March and a loss of $1,029,609 for the current fiscal year. which ends today (Wednesday, April 30).
TMU Director Chad Davis is optimistic the final condition will improve during the month of April and get closer to the budgeted loss of approximately $700,000 for the year. He said the RICE upgrades have been completed at the south substation and the capacity credits for those generating units, approximately $70,000, will come back and be reflected in the department’s finances. More stable electric supply costs and the rate increase that begins in June should also help improve the electric department finances, Davis added.
The water department shows net income of $215,313 and the wastewater department shows income of $270,580, both with one month left in the fiscal year. Comptroller Rosetta Marsh said preliminary work on the utility audit will begin today (Wednesday), with the main work to begin in June. She also said work has begun to improve security in the front office of TMU and the City of Trenton.
Davis reported that construction at the water treatment plant is making good progress and the completion date is the middle of May. He said the utility has worked with the contractor to make some additional changes to the project. He also said that sludge removal at the treatment basin began in the middle of March.
All members of the board were in attendance at the meeting and the next regularly scheduled meeting of the board is Tuesday, May 27.
