Sgt. Mike Knapp

Sgt Michael J. Knapp was killed in action on Friday, May 18, 2012 while deployed to Asadabad, Afghanistan.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Legacy Christian Church in Overland Park, KS. Military Honors and inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Sgt. Knapp was marred in October 2008 to the former Abby Brassfield, granddaughter of Sue Brassfield of Trenton and the late J.A. Brassfield. The couple moved to Ft. Lewis, WA, in March 2010 after he joined Active Duty Army. He deployed to Asadabad, Afghanistan, Nov. 14, 2011, with the 17th Fires Brigade. He died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with a rocket.
Military honors included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, three Iraq Campaign Medals with Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Armed Forces Reserve Medals with M Device, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, two NATO Medals Kosovo, Combat Action Badge, four Overseas Service Bars and the Louisiana Emergency Service Ribbon and Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Abby Dyan Brassfield Knapp, of Overland Park; daughter, Kinsley Payton Knapp; mother, Sandra Knapp of Overland Park; sister, Wendy Knapp of Overland Park; grandfather, John Knapp of Bucyrus, KS; his in-laws, Tom and Marla Brassfield of Overland Park; and Abby’s siblings, Amy Knapp, Clay Brassfield and Casey Brassfield.
Memorials are suggested for Sgt. Knapp’s daughter, Kinsley Knapp. They may be sent to the Valley View Bank.
Attending services from Trenton were Mike and Jane Cooksey, Jada and Avery Cooksey, Sondra Lisle, Denise Guile and Dana Ferguson.
